Spotlight on Gardner High School’s UWYV Champion Thuy Bui

It's Pretty Cool to be Called a Champion GraphicOur ±«°Â³Û³ÕÌýGHS Champion/°ä³ó²¹²Ô²µ±ð³¾²¹°ì±ð°ùÌý°Õ³ó³Ü²âÌýBuiÌýhas been volunteeringÌýat theduring this time of social distancing. It isÌýGardnerÌýschoolteachers, like Thuy, that have been fillingÌýmanyÌýof the volunteer spots. Thuy misses her students, and this is one way that she can see her students and fulfill a real community need.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý

Before the school shutdown,Ìý°Õ³ó³Ü²âÌýwasÌýinvolved in the cultivation of UWYV TeamÌýGardner Grow’sÌýcommunity garden.ÌýThis team hadÌýa successfulÌýgarden last summer. You can read more aboutÌýit inÌýthisÌýblog postÌýthat I had written last fall.ÌýÌý

In last week’s blog post, I talked about how Samoset Middle School UWYV students on Team Save Earth Today would like to implement composting at Samoset.ÌýÌýÌý

Well……Ìý

As it turns out, theÌý±«°Â³Û³ÕÌýGardner GrowsÌýTeam hasÌýtwo small compost piles that theyÌýstarted before the shutdown of schools.ÌýThe students filled theseÌýpilesÌýwith food scraps that they brought in from home,Ìýor with scraps from items grown in theÌýcommunityÌýgarden.ÌýAccording to Thuy, the students want to create a compost bin where they can takeÌýfood scrapsÌýfrom the school cafeteria and use it for theirÌýgarden. They wouldÌýalsoÌýlike toÌýdonateUWYV Champion Thuy Bui excess scrapsÌýto aÌýlocalÌýfarm.ÌýÌýÌý

Connecting GHS and Samoset UWYV Teams

Do you see where I am going with this?ÌýIt would beÌýcoolÌýto connect these teams! Even if theÌýhigh schoolÌýstudentsÌýon the Gardner teamÌýsimplyÌýmade a short video on composting,Ìýand then shared it with the Samoset team,Ìýthey wouldÌýhopefullyÌýbe inspiredÌýto implement composting at Samoset.Ìý Ìý

Unfortunately, the plans for the garden and composting are on holdÌýnow,Ìýbut hopefully not for long!Ìý

Spotlight on Gardner High School’s UWYV Champion °Õ³ó³Ü²âÌýBuiÌý

Now, on withÌýmy latest Spotlight onÌýa Champion.ÌýLikeÌýallÌýourÌýChampions, Thuy isÌýbusyÌýat home, and in the spirit of a true Changemaker,ÌýmakesÌýthe time to volunteer asÌýwell.ÌýÌýÌý

How long have you been a Champion for UWYV? And what do you like best about having this role?Ìý

I have been a Champion for UWYV since I started at GHS which was in 2015. I love my interactions with students and encouraging them to explore what theyÌýcan achieve when they put their minds to it.

How are you doing? What does a typical day-at-home look like for you?Ìý

ÌýI amÌýdoing okay.ÌýIt’s a bit of a struggle sometimes, but then I hear from my students and it becomes a bit easier to deal with. A typical day-at-home is trying to plan lessons for my students, that would get them as engaged as possible. I am alsoÌýhelping myÌýMom care for my nieces and nephews, or I amÌýcooking with her. It is a weird balancing act right now.Ìý

How has the stay-at-home/socialÌýdistancingÌýof COVID-19 affected you positively?Ìý

ÌýI feel like I can spend a bit more time with families, now that I am home most of the time. Ìý

Do you have a positive Changemaking story that has resulted from this?ÌýÌý

I have been handing out food to the Gardner food program and itÌýdefinitely makes me feel more connected with my students. I deliver food once a week on Mondays, andÌýit isÌýalways nice to see the students and their families.Ìý

ÌýÌýAre you able to connect with your students remotely? (Zoom? Google Classroom, or email?) How are they?Ìý

ÌýI useÌýZoom andÌýGoogleÌýClassroom to connect with my students. Unfortunately, a good percentage of myÌýstudentsÌýdon’tÌýalways make theÌýZoom meetings. The ones that I do see seem to be doing well, and it’sÌýalways nice to chatÌýandÌýcatch up with them.ÌýIt’s a bonus, when they say they miss school!Ìý

Are you in touch with anyÌý±«°Â³Û³ÕÌýteams?ÌýÌýIf so, what are they up to?Ìý

ÌýI’veÌýbeen in touch with a few of the teams. They seem to be doing well and are trying to keep up withÌýschoolwork.Ìý

Garnder High School Champion Thuy Bui UWYV Team Launches
Gardner High School Youth Venture Team Launches

If UWYV (Youth Venture) wasÌýofferedÌýto you as a young student, what would your cause be and why?Ìý

ÌýI think my cause would be to try and improve the literacy rates and love of reading for students and families. I know growing up, IÌýdidn’t always love reading or have family members read to me (language barrier and all). Therefore, I would have loved to find a way to bring reading to families that might have been in the same situation as I was.ÌýÌý

What was oneÌýof your most memorable experiences (so far!) being Champion?Ìý

ÌýGoing to the Spring Showcase – definitely!ÌýIt amazes me, theÌýamount of passions andÌýhard workÌýthese students are showing! It has inspired me to be better.Ìý

What message would you like to sendÌýallÌýyour students?Ìý

ÌýI’ve always loved the saying, “Impossible has the word possible in it.” I can’tÌýremember where I heard itÌýfrom,Ìýbut I want them to know that if they want something, then with a little bit ofÌýhard work, it is possible!Ìý

Is there anything else you would like to share?Ìý

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to shareÌýourÌýyouth’s passions andÌýto tryÌýandÌýbetter our surroundings oneÌýventure project at a time!Ìý

Thank you for taking the time to fill us in Thuy! We will see you back in the classroom and the garden soon!
