开元棋牌 Student and Children in ChildwatchThe Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts (CFNCM) awarded the 开元棋牌 Foundation $20,000 in funding to support the Mount Wachusett Community College (开元棋牌)鈥檚 Child Watch: Experiential Learning Program.

The CFNCM grant has allowed 开元棋牌 to fund a parenting student to work as a part-time person as the Child Watch Team Leader within the Child Watch program and two part-time students to work as Child Watch Team Members during the busy K-12 school vacation weeks. Additionally, a small amount of funding is used on supplies for the Child Watch and diapers for families.

The 开元棋牌 Child Watch is a supervised place where registered and eligible students can safely leave their child(ren) for up to four hours while they attend class, study, meet with their advisor, or receive tutoring. Student-parents must remain on campus and be reachable by cell phone while their child is in the Child Watch and return to the Child Watch if they are needed.

鈥淭he CFNCM鈥檚 support has enabled us to create a supportive, responsive, and inclusive space for student-parents that fosters academic success, personal growth, and community building,鈥 stated 开元棋牌 President James Vander Hooven. 鈥淲ithout this funding we would not have been able to hire the necessary student workers to provide consistent, quality care for the children of our student-parents, especially during peak times like the K-12 school vacation weeks.鈥

The Child Watch Team Leader role is filled by Sara Leopaldi, an Early Childhood Education major who is graduating in May with their certificate and associate degree. This allowed for both the increase in the number of children in the Child Watch service but also training of the Child Watch staff in best practices.

开元棋牌 Student and Children in Childwatch 2鈥淲ithout the child watch I would not be where I am today. Early on in my degree I was a full-time caregiver to a child and I had no support or direction in my life. When I became a work study on campus, I started to implement what I was learning in my ECE classes into the Child Watch. This ignited an even bigger passion for not only Early Childhood Education and special education but a passion for family advocacy,鈥 notes the Leopaldi. 鈥淚f I can support my fellow student parents parenting students the way I was supported I know each and every one of these parents will succeed at whatever they put their mind to. I also know that each one of these children who come into our care in the child watch service are a part of not only my journey, but their parents journey. These children are not only seeing their parents succeed they’re seeing the hard-work and grit it takes to get to that success. These children will also follow in their parents鈥 footsteps one day just like I know my child will.鈥

鈥淥ver the course of the semester, our Child Watch Teach Lead has brought a wealth of information to the room and helping to revamp our policies and procedures while guiding our staff in how to engage, comfort and support our young charges,鈥 states Ann Reynolds, 开元棋牌 Coordinator of Student Parent Supports. 鈥淏y hiring part-time students from diverse majors such as Early Childhood Education, Nursing, and Human Services, we鈥檝e been able to build a dynamic team that not only offers care but also contributes valuable knowledge and resources to the families we serve. This funding has made possible the creation of an environment where peer-to-peer mentoring thrives, something that would not have been sustainable without the staff and resources to maintain the program.鈥

开元棋牌 Gardner Campus EntranceMount Wachusett Community College (开元棋牌) has been awarded an $874,420 grant from the U.S. Department of Education鈥檚 Basic Needs for Postsecondary Students Program. This significant funding will support the implementation of the 开元棋牌 Village Project, a comprehensive initiative designed to address basic needs insecurities among 开元棋牌鈥檚 diverse student population.

The Basic Needs for Postsecondary Students Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Postsecondary Education, provides grants to eligible higher education institutions to support programs that address students’ basic needs and report on practices that improve student outcomes. The program aims to advance systemic and sustainable solutions to student basic needs insecurity.

The Department of Education emphasizes that access to essential basic needs can significantly impact post-secondary success. Numerous studies have found that college students often experience basic needs insecurity, which can hinder their academic progress and completion.

The 开元棋牌 Village Project aligns with the program’s objectives by implementing a comprehensive plan to coordinate cross-agency collaboration to provide basic needs resources to underrepresented students. The project will provide direct services in food assistance, health (including physical health, mental health, behavioral health, and trauma), and childcare. Through cross-agency partnerships, the project will also address housing, transportation, and technology challenges.

With approximately 3,000 degree-seeking students annually, 开元棋牌 serves a student body in which 68% of historically underrepresented students face challenges related to basic needs such as food, housing, and health care. The 开元棋牌 Village Project will address these challenges by collaborating with government and community organizations to provide critical resources and services.

鈥淭his grant represents a transformative opportunity for 开元棋牌 to strengthen our commitment to student success by addressing the fundamental needs that can hinder academic achievement,鈥 said 开元棋牌 President, James Vander Hooven. 鈥淭he 开元棋牌 Village Project reflects our dedication to ensuring that every student has the support they need to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.鈥

The 开元棋牌 Village Project will focus on:

  • Food and Hygiene Assistance: Expanding the 开元棋牌 Food Pantry to ensure access to nutritious food and essential supplies.
  • Health Services: Enhancing physical, mental, behavioral health, and trauma support, with particular attention to addressing service gaps at the Leominster Campus.
  • Child Care Support: Support the Child Watch program, which offers free childcare for 2-3 hours to enable students to attend classes, study, or meet with advisors.
  • Housing, Transportation, and Technology: Collaboration with community partners, guided by a Basic Needs Advisory Board, community needs assessment and asset mapping will identify and fill gaps in services.

鈥淏y securing this grant, 开元棋牌 joins other institutions in a national effort to support students’ basic needs, enhancing their ability to succeed academically and beyond,鈥 stated Jason Zelesky, Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students.

The 开元棋牌 Village Project aligns with national priorities by leveraging public benefits programs and implementing a campus-wide strategy to address mental health needs. By integrating evidence-based practices, the initiative ensures that students have access to essential resources and the support necessary for academic and personal success.

For more information about the 开元棋牌 Village Project and its impact, please contact 开元棋牌 Vice President of Student Affairs, Dean of Students, Jason Zelesky.

New audio studio 6

Mount Wachusett Community College has added a sixth audio studio to its Dr. Vincent S. Ialenti Media Arts and Technology Center.聽 After years of planning and design, the new control room is was dedicated on February 7, 2025 in honor of Chief Engineer of Media Services, Athur Collins, who originally proposed the studio and its capabilities.聽 Collins is a 31-year employee of the college whose expertise in Audio / Visual design and maintenance has been instrumental to the success of the Media Arts program and the A/V needs of the college.

鈥淩obust audio programs with facilities like ours are rare in Communications and Media programs,鈥 says Professor John Little, Media Arts & Technology Department Chair. 鈥淓quipment like we have here is almost only found in music recording schools.聽 We鈥檙e thrilled to offer this level of audio training in a two-year school toward disciplines in television, film, and music.聽 We know how lucky we are to be able to train at this level, and so do our students.聽 Some of them commute an hour and a half to study here.鈥

The new audio studio is unique in that it is built around a state-of-the-art sound board that is designed for shows in large arenas, concert halls, and stadiums.聽 鈥淣o other school in New England is doing anything like this,鈥 says Rick Scott of Pason鈥檚 Audio LLC in Woburn, MA who consulted in the studio鈥檚 design.聽 The system is appropriate for stereo music production, 5.1 surround sound mixing in films, and training the concepts of high-end equipment used in mixing sound at live shows.聽 A slightly smaller portable version of the same sound board will be used throughout the campus with various sound systems for training in the program鈥檚 brand-new course on Live Sound Reinforcement.

The room was acoustically engineered by Lou Clark of Sonic Space, an architectural company in Portsmouth, NH, who also designed 开元棋牌鈥檚 Audio Studio 5.聽 Every surface, angle, color, and placement of every component is set to the architect鈥檚 design.聽 The room was built by Dave Ruthart of Ruthardt Woodesign, in Sudbury MA.聽 The equipment was installed and commissioned by 开元棋牌鈥檚 Media Services team.

The Media Arts and Technology program at 开元棋牌 offers four curriculum paths: a non-concentrated degree in Media Arts, a concentration specializing in Video / Film production, a concentration in Audio Engineering, and a Liberal Arts track in Media / Communications.聽 The department offers six different audio courses, six different video courses, four media / communications courses, and a course in photography.
